Field Experience Assignments

Week of Topics and meetings Tasks
Sept 4-7

Thurs. Sept 5 at 5:30 ITV Introduction to the class, and overview of Cognitively Guided Instruction and the addition and subtraction problem types.

Start reading the textbook chapters before Thursday's class, but don't take the quizzes until after Thursday (class time should be useful for that)

* In the textbook Children's Mathematics: Cognitively Guided Instruction, read the introduction and chapter1.
*Print and bring to class Thursday:

*Read CGI Lesson 1 and take the associated D2L quiz (due end of week, Sept 7)
*Read CGI Lesson 2 and take the associated D2L quiz
*Read CGI Lesson 3 and take the associated D2L quiz.
*Try the CGI problem types quiz (optional for now)

Sept 8-14 Saturday Sept 14 at UW-RF (1-4 pm)

* In the textbook Children's Mathematics: Cognitively Guided Instruction, read chapter 2, and the section Direct Modeling Strategies in chapter 3 (up to page 18).
*Read CGI Lesson 4 and take the associated D2L quiz
*Read CGI Lesson 5 and submit the associated assignment (due Friday by 5 pm)

Sept 15-21 (Online help session via D2L at 5:30 Changed to Friday evening--bring your questions) *Practice identifying some CGI types
*Read CGI Lesson 6 and take the associated D2L quiz
*Read CGI Lesson 7 and take the associated D2L quiz
*Watch the CGI review
*Take the retakeable online CGI quiz
*Either this week or next week take the D2L quiz on CGI and CCSS problem types.
Sept 22-28

Thurs Sept 26 ITV

* In the textbook Children's Mathematics: Cognitively Guided Instruction, read chapter 2, read chapter 7
*Read CGI Lesson 8 and submit the associated assignment
*Using your notes from Saturday 9/15, take the CGI and CCSS problem types D2L quiz
*Read Basic Facts Lesson 0 and Lesson 1 and take the associated D2L quizzes.
*On Thursday we will be discussing the CGI interview assignment
Sept 29-Oct 5 Thursday optional help session on D2L Thursday evening.

Read/watch the basic facts lessons on counting strategies, and take the associated D2L quizzes
*Lesson 2.2 Counting on (D2L quiz)
*Lesson 2.3 Counting back (D2L quiz)
*Lesson 2.4 Counting up to (D2L quiz)

Oct 6-12

Saturday Oct 12 at UW-RF
Optional help session on D2L Thursday evening.

Bring with you to class:
* Primary Mathematics book 2A
* Primary Mathematics book 3A
* Your math manipuative kit, especially the Unifix cubes and the Cuisenaire rods.

Prepare for test 1 on Saturday:
* What to study
*CGI in textbooks assignment. (turn in to dropbox)
*Optional: read ahead lessons 2.5, 2.6 and 2.7 (we will be learning and discussing this content in class).

Saturday agenda:
*Cuisenaire rods and small number facts
*Cuisenaire rods and bar diagrams
*10-frames, small number facts and number talks
*Test 1: CGI, direct modeling and counting strategies.

Oct 13-19  

Note: lessons 2.5-2.7 are recaps of what we did in class on Saturday. 2.8 is new this week.
Lesson 2.5 Add and subtract with Cuisenaire rods; take the D2L quiz
Lesson 2.6 Small number fluency; Assignment (note: the practice problems are particularly helpful questions 5 and 6 of for this assignment)
Lesson 2.7 Bar diagrams and math mountains; Assignment
Lesson 2.8 Use doubles; D2L quiz
E-mail me with your field experience placement information (what grade level), and do one starting task on the field placement assignments. (Do observations for assn 2 or write your CGI interview plan for assn 1)

Turn one field experience assignment (Write up of observations of CGI interview. If you didn't write your interview plan last week, you should also do that this week)

Analyze a unit assignment part 1--write an analysis of the first lesson
Turn in another field experience assignment (whichever of the CGI interview report of observarion report you didn't turn in last week)

Nov 3-9

Saturday Nov 9 at UW-RF

Lesson 3.1, and D2L quiz and assignment.
Lesson 3.2 and assignment
Analyze a unit assignment part 2--finish the unit analysis assignment
Prepare a 10-minute mini-lesson to share with our class on Saturday. E-mail me a short synopsis of what you will share.
Review for the test (the test is on unit 2 only)

Turn in plan for a math talk/number talk mini-lesson. Also submit it to, and schedule it with your cooperating teacher. Math talk lesson plan and reflection template is here.
