Use another notation for the value of calculations to the left and right of an = sign

If you use another sign to show the value of each side when doing open number sentence problems, it can help children understand the role of the = sign.  In a way, the new symbol you are using is taking on the role of being "the answer" so the equals sign can have the role of showing "the same as".  Two common symbols are brackets, and the V or triangle symbols that are often used for part-part-whole problems.

What are things that elementary teachers can do to help children feel comfortable and familiar with the "same as" meaning of the = sign?

Try to remember, or figure out each of these ways to teach this important concept, and then click to check your answers.
