Make a video of yourself showing and explaining how to solve the 3-digit subtraction problem 527-149 using manipulatives and numbers.

Recording options

Option 1: make a screencast video on your computer.

Option 2: make a video recording of yourself using the base 10 block manipulatives in your math kit to solve the problem, and write on a piece of paper next to it (use a marker or something similar for your writing so it will show up well in the video). Upload the finished recording to the dropbox, or to Kaltura.

Math explanation instructions

Show how to solve 527 -149 with manipulatives and numbers. Do a single step with the manipulatives and then write it down with numbers, then do the next step and write it down, etc. Always do the manipulative step first, and then explain how to write that step down with numbers.

Use "trade" or "exchange" vocabulary, for example: "I trade in a ten for 10 ones." Try to not use "borrow" and "carry", and always make sure you explain how much you're trading in and what you're trading it for (and that it's a fair, equal trade).

Use "tens" and "hundreds when talking about digits in the tens and hundreds place. The 5 in 527 should always be five hundred when you say it out loud. and the 4 in 149 should always be four tens or forty (not just 4).

Try to use subtraction sentences correctly. You subtract the minuend minus the subtrahend or the subtrahend from the minuend (or take away the subtrahend from the minuend).

Here are some example videos of subtraction explanations: This one shows me solving 643 - 276 using a SMART Notebook using Smart Notebook Express (a mini version of SMART Notebook you can use onlline). Here's another example.

Some recording software instructions.

Using Kaltura and Relay Recorder:

Using Jing:

Download and install Jing from the Techsmith site. Jing is a small, stable, free screencast recorder that will let you choose to record either your whole screen or just part of your screen. The one disadvantage to Jing is that you can only record 5 minutes at a time, so if you need a longer recording time, you will need to make two videos.

When you download Jing, you will have the option of signing up for free video hosting space at screencast.com. It's easy to upload video to screencast.com from Jing, but you also have the option of saving the video file on your computer (not an option from Relay Recorder). If you save the file to your computer, you will need to upload it to the dropbox or to Kaltura. If you save it to screencast.com, you will need to send me a link to the web address of your video.

Using Screencast-o-matic:

Screencast-o-matic is my third option only because some past students have trouble with it crashing. I've had great luck, and I find it a more user friendly option than the previous two, so if you are at all brave computer-wise, you should check it out.
