Week of Sept 13 Math 247 Content and Assignments

Integers (number line subtraction as missing number addition)
This week we started with a discussion of showing subtraction of integers on a number line using a JCU or missing-addend model.

Practice problems from the number line discussion 9/13

Fraction circles and the importance of specifying a whole
Next, we started working with fraction circles using some of the activities from the Rational Number Project 3rd grade materials (these questions are not taken directly from the RNP materials--I have combines questions from a few activities for this worksheet):

Fractions from partitions and repeated parts
We also practiced how to fold fraction bars from a sheet of paper, and looked at this Common Core State Standard for Mathematics (grade 3):

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.1
Understand a fraction 1/b as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into b equal parts; understand a fraction a/b as the quantity formed by a parts of size 1/b.

Fractions greater than 1
We will continue this discussion by looking at how to express whole numbers as fractions and how to represent fractions greater than 1.

Comparing fractions without a common denominator

We will look at some examples of comparing fractions using strategies that rely primarily on the repeated partitions reasoning (CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.NF.A.1) by comparing related sets of fractions:

Note: this week's worksheets will not be collected, but there will be a homework quiz next Wednesday on this content.
