Adding and subtracting using several strategies:
For each of these problems, show and/or explain several different ways to solve them.
The problems:
1. 7+8
2. 36+48
3. 14-8
4. 60-37
5. 82-38
Some strategies we have discussed or seen:
Addition:
Counting on (from first or from higher)
Use doubles
Make 10
Break into tens and ones and add
Round and compensate
Add on in chunks
Subtraction:
Counting back
Counting up to
Adding up to
Take away tens and ones
Take away in chunks
Round and compensate
Shift the number line
Each problem will be graded on a rubric of this sort, with some consideration to whether you show an understanding on each strategy somewhere in the set of problems (so if, for example, you show shifting on the numberline for one problem, but not the other you would get closer to a perfect score overall than if that strategy were completely missing from your work).
Full points--a variety of strategies are shown that covers the spectrum of strategies we have seen and discussed, and the strategies are appropriate for the problem given.
Half points--some significantly different strategies are shown, but there are other kinds of strategies that are missed completely.
No points--only the answer is given.
