Hexagon classification assignment:
Your task is to invent a special group of hexagons, define and name your group, and give examples of hexagons in your group.
I suggest that you start by looking at my hexagons, and choose one that looks interesting to you.
Then look at the properties that the interesting hexagon has. Choose 1 or 2 properties that make the hexagon interesting, and use your properties to:
Define a way to sort a group of hexagons. I'll be looking for your definition to be:
- Geometric (it shouldn't matter if I make the shape bigger or smaller or turn it in a different orientation, your rule for the group will work the same)
- Careful (I should be able to take any hexagon at all and be able to tell for sure whether it belongs in your group or not)
- Mathematical (you should use appropriate math words if there is an appropriate word that fits)
Give your group a name choose a name we can use to refer to the hexagons in your group. It can be a name that makes it easy to remember the properties (parallelogram is a great example of that) or it can just be a nonsense word (splort).
Give at least 3 examples of hexagons in your group. You can use some of the ones on my hexagon sheet if they fit your definition. I'll be looking for your examples to be:
- Correct (I should agree that your examples all fit your group definition. If you have examples that don 't fit your definition, then either your examples aren't correct, or your definition isn't careful enough.)
- Interesting (If it's possible for different hexagons in your group to look different by having different angles or sides of different lengths, I want to see some of that variation in your examples. Your 3 hexagons should look different in ways other than orientation and overall size if it's possible for them to do so and still be in your group).
