Vocabulary for regrouping
Use phrases like:
- Trade 10 ones for 1 ten; trade 1 ten for ten ones; the words "change" or "exchange" can be used interchangeably with the word "trade". These phrases are particularly appropriate if children have had experience with pregrouped base 10 materials.
- Group 10 ones to make a ten; Break apart a ten into 10 ones. The words "ungroup" and "unbundle can be used interchangeably with "break apart", and "bundle" can be used interchangeably with "group". These phrases are particularly appropriate if children have had experience with groupable base 10 materials.
Don't use:
- Borrow
- Carry
The words borrow and carry, as usually used to describe where you put the numbers, and aren't connected to the meanings of the amounts of the numbers. This is one of those rules like "don't start a sentence with and" that isn't a rule at all, it's just a way to avoid a particular type of error. The real rule is, don't use the words borrow or carry unless you also use vocabulary that describes the meaning of the process.
