I strongly reccommend that you make sure that you know how to get the correct answer on your calculator before taking the quiz. It is possible to punch the buttons in the wrong order and get the wrong answer.
1. Issac Hedron earned 350 out of 400 possible homework points in his non-linear analysis class, and earned 125 out of 200 possible test points. If his teacher weights homework as 25% of the grade and tests as 75% of the grade. What is Issac's weighted average score?
First, find the percent score for each of homework and tests:
HW: 350/400=.875; tests: 125/200=.625
Weighting: 87.5*.25 + 62.5*.75 = 21.875 + 46.875 = 68.75
or, of course, .875*.25 + .625*.75 = .21875 + .46875 = .6875
For the purposes of this class, you may report this as 68.75%, 68.7% or 69%. Indeedm on this quiz, you may even round the percents before taking a weighted average.
In practice, you should not expect your teacher to round (or not round) any scores before assigning grades unless they say they will.
2. Polly Gon earned 270 out of 400 possible homework points in her graph theory class, and earned 175 out of 200 possible test points. If her teacher weights homework as 15% of the grade and tests as 85% of the grade. What is Polly's weighted average score?
HW: 270/400 = .675=67.5%
tests: 175/200 = .875=87.5%
Weighted average: 67.5*.15 + 87.5*.85 = 10.125 + 74.375 = 84.5%
or, alternately, .675*.15+.875*.85=.845
The answers 84.5%, and 85% are both acceptable (see above)
3. Tess Elation earned 300 out of 400 possible homework points in her class on mathematicsl physics, and earned 168 out of 200 possible test points. If the teacher weights homework as 10% of the grade, and tests as 90% of the grade, what is Tess' weighted average score?
HW: 300/400 = .75 = 75%
tests: 168/200 = .84 = 84%
Weighted average: 75*.1 + 84*.9 = 83.1
or, .75*.1 + .84*.9 = .831
The answers 83.1% and 83% are both acceptable.
4. Abe Elian is in Activities in Math. He earned 250 out of 350 possible quiz points, and earned 165 out of 200 possible test points. In Abe's class, his teacher counts all points in the same group (no weighting). What is Abe's average score?
No weighting:
Add all earned points: 250 + 165 = 415
Add the points possible: 350 + 200 = 550
Divide: 415/550 = .754545...
The answers 75.45%, 75.5% and 75% are all acceptable (but not 76%--you only get to round once)
5. Hypatia Bolic (see also) is in Activities in Math. She earned 320 out of 350 possible quiz points, and earned 130 out of 200 possible test points. In Hypatia's class, her teacher counts all points in the same group (no weighting). What is Hypatia's average score?
No weighting:
Add all earned points: 320 + 130 = 450
Add the points possible: 350 + 200 = 550
Divide: 450/550 = .81818181...
The answers 81.82%, 81.8% and 89% are all acceptable
