Writing a test on simulataneous equations assignment:

Your test should include assessments of...

Finding the solution of a pair of linear 2-variable equations by:

--substitution

--graphing

--addition and multiplication

Graphing a pair of linear 2-variable inequalities

Deciding whether a pair of equations is independent, dependent or inconsistent, and telling what that means (how many solutions)

The length of your test should be...

About right for a 45 minute class period

Computer-wise your test should be written in Microsoft Word, and should either use Equation Editor for the equations, or should be typeset in such a way as to be mostly indistinguishable from the sorts of equations you would find printed in a text book or math paper.

You should turn in: a printed copy of your test where you have worked all of the problems as an answer key.

You should include a grading key for one item where you tell what you would give in terms of partial credit.

Something vaguely like a rubric, maybe:

The test is of reasonable length (2 pts)

The test is worded clearly so that students are required to show their understanding of all of the main points of the topic as denoted above, and the test items are well chosen to test an appropriate range of what students should know (10 pts)

The test looks nice (decent typesetting, etc), and is well formatted to provide a reasonable amount of space for students to work out problems (4 pts)

The answer key is correct, and shows all of the relevant steps of the problems (5 pts)

The grading rubric is clear and easy enough to follow that someone besides yourself could use it, and it pinpoints key steps and points of student understanding. (4 pts)
