Video assignment: direct modeling to solve addition and subtraction problems

For this assignment, you need to have watched, read and thought about how to direct model problems of the types: JRU, SRU, SCU, JCU, and CDU.

The problems you will be showing how to direct model are:

Join Result Unknown (Use the Joining All strategy): Madeline had 4 toy cats. Her friend gave her 2 more toy cats. How many toy cats does she have now?

Join Change Unknown (Use the Joining To strategy): Kallie made 5 bead necklaces. How many more does she need to make to have 7 bead necklaces?

Separate Result Unknown (Use the Separating From strategy): Nick had 8 carrot sticks. He ate two carrot sticks. How many carrot sticks are left?

Separate Change Unknown (Use the Separating To strategy): John had 6 cookies. He ate some, and now 2 are left. How many cookies did he eat?

Compare Difference Unknown (Use the Matching Strategy): There are 8 cups and 5 saucers in my cupboard. How many more cups than saucers are there?

To show this, you will need some technology tools. This assignment is here at this point of the course so that if you have trouble with the technology, you'll find out right away, and let me know, so we can get something worked out before the problems where its really important for you to be able to use these technology tools.

If you haven't already done so (and do not have another screencast program that you prefer to use), you should download and install Jing

If you have a PC, you should download and install Smart Notebook.

I recommend that you make a test video first, to make sure that the microphone (built in or plugged in) is working, and will record your comments as you solve the problems.

Once you have done that, download this SMART Notebook file: ProbsToDirectModelv2.notebook

Note: downloading Smart Notebook files seems to not work with some web browsers for reasons I don't fully understand (the files are not openable when downloaded)-- Firefox seems to work better than Explorer. The thing that seems to go wrong is that the suffix (.notebook) is lost from the filename when it is downloaded (so sometimes adding the suffix to the file name makes the file work).  Alternately, you can e-mail me at the beginning of each unit, and I can e-mail you the files (that generally seems to work).  If neither this link nor e-mail works for getting you a file you can open, please let me know, so I can experiment with some other ways to get you notebook files.

Open Smart Notebook or Smart Notebook Express, and then open the file ProbsToDirectModelv2.notebook.

In this file, there are 5 pages.  Each page has a word problem for you to solve, and a set of colored squares on the left for you to use as manipulatives. These colored squares are set to be infinite cloners: that means that you can click and drag on it, and it will make a colored square for you to use (so, each square will make as many squares as you want). Look through the file, and figure out what you would do with each of the problems before you begin.

Start your screen recorder and record yourself solving the problems. You may want to watch my demo vid too before you start (Watch me start to finish: download and install Jing. Open a file using Smart Notebook Express. Record and save a video. It's kinda long, but maybe it will help if things aren't working smoothly for you) Demo: Jing and Smart Notebook Express

Go through each page, and show me how you would direct model to solve that problem (as if you were a child, using the direct modeling strategy I specified above), so that you have done 5 problems in your movie at the end. You should talk through what you are doing as you solve each problem (provide commentary). Jing has a maximum of 5 minutes recording time. If you can't do all 5 problems in 5 minutes, you can split it over two movies.

You can submit movies in one of three ways:
